i completely understand the argument of "alt people have always been mean" but i really do feel like it's a slight mis-contextualization made by media in the 90s-2010s. the community has always been loud and firm in their ideologies, many of which encompass basic human rights. they were always mean to corruption/oppression, but being mean to a random dude just sucks. deciding to make someone's day worse literally does nothing but put you at a higher position unfairly..... kinda poser behavior if you ask me (kidding). i feel alt people were painted as mean strongly by mtv, when many of them would enter the stage to preach kindness, they were called "vile ghouls" (not making that up). i think emo being mean was just a product of a very dark and uncertain world time, and maybe we'll think the same about 2024 in a decade. as someone who had a preppy social butterfly sister around 2010, i think all the teenagers just were on edge and therefor kinda rude, because her group had the same edgy style humor as many emos did.

Basic people are really not the bullies alt people tend to shame them as. I think they happen to witness these situations where SOME basic people bark at alt people or something and assume they're all like that. About people just starting out, I'm only mean to them if they are the "I don't bother to look up shit and I ask you how you did something and expect you to give me a tutorial on how to be you", these guys annoy me sOOO MUCH. Ik they're asking genuine questions but GOD DAMN IT CAN YOU ACTUALLY TRY TO DO SOMETHING BY YOURSELF???? "omgg can I be this style if I'm x, y and z?" take a wild guess

not to mention most "styles" they ask about always have more stuff to them than just the way it looks, and when you expect everything to be served simple and easy to you and water stuff down to just the aesthetics it becomes harmful to the actual history of it all.

i understand that, but i think it comes from a geniune place when it comes to style. most starting out are kids/teens who are really growing up with the more aesthetic side of the subculture than anything. thats how i found out, then i decided to research more and listen to the music, ect. i think its nice to direct them to learn that its a subculture and not an aesthtetic, if they choose to only go the aesthtic route, at least u tried yk

Honestly alternative people historically have been kind of mean, especially in the late 2000's. However, because alternative people are a minority and a subculture and punk, goth, and most/some emo subcultures require leaning left politically, and with recent world events, a lot of their worldviews tend towards being antisocial towards or rallying against the mainstream. This can explain why they act this way, but that should really only be applied to people who want your subculture or minority you are a part of to be destroyed, not because people aren't a part of the same tribe.
The issue with this though is that subcultures, especially with people who are young, you get a god complex that you're better than normal people for being different. You get a group of people like you, and a lot of people want to uphold a social ladder or hierarchy. Hence the gatekeepers and other people being mean to each other, or hating people who are "normal".

yeah I've noticed its only younger alt people doing this and not like ogs or people who were there during the peak of the fashion. I'm glad its coming back, Im not part of an alt subculture myself, I usually do my makeup inspired from those subcultures , but my clothing style is really just dressing in all black, but I think people need to understand the fashion is so expensive nowadays and all most people have is the music or the books or learning about the politics.

???
You don't have to spend a lot of money to be alternative if you want to call yourself that, if you have all of the actual parts of the culture down then you can call yourself alt. But if you're not alt or claiming to be while dressing like you are alternative, especially if you're taking inspiration from the makeup, that might cause some issues if people think you're copying the subculture without the commitment.
I'm not trying to attack or come at you in bad faith by the way, I'm just a little confused by your message now.

oh no its okay. my main message was just letting people start out in peace. what i meant to say was i do my makeup in what i guess u could say an alternative way? but i also listen to goth music and lean that way politically but i don't dress like it. and by expensive, i just mean exclusively alt brands like vampirefreaks which ive seen alot of alt ppl advertise. of course, most go thrifting but that's what i meant by expensive

My bad! But yeah definitely lmao... the only VampireFreaks thing I have is a waterbottle :'). Subcultures are trying to be watered down into an aesthetic by the internet, and people can't understand that. Alt brands are great but that kind of takes the alt out of alternative most of the time, especially when they get expensive, but you didn't hear that from me.
I hope people who try to gatekeep because they're posers touch grass one day.
