Not to mention the arguments about politics in subcultures and music like to most online alt people they think if you listen to a popular band you must be a "poser" because like no I don't have to listen to an underground band with only 3 listeners to be alt any band that makes alt music popular or not is still alt and subcultures do have politics but people online refuse to admit that you can't be conservative and alternative they only like it for aesthetics and now everything is watered down and gatekeepy and loosing it's meaning

i mean, maybe this is just cuz im older but this has always been happening with younger alt communities lol i was in middle and hs in the late 2000s and early 2010s and theres always been this like "normal ppl SUCK" mentality but i think that kind of just goes hand in hand with being an edgy teen. i dont doubt that its worse now due to the fact that social media encourages toxic behavior, but alt kids have always had a thing against "normies" or "preps/preppy kids" like i would've said in middle school lol it feels almost like a right of passage for some edgy alt teen to make friends w someone w more conventional fashion tastes and realize "oh wait they're fine i had this image in my head that wasn't real" it is nice though to see new younger alt folk push against that idea a little bit

it's identity politics. children think they invented some cool people group and push people out who dont stroke their ego or question them. social media robbed them of emotionally developing enough to understand the intricacies of people being different regardless of if they have a band tshirt on. its simply ironic: "alternative" fashion has become mainstream, and as kids do, they bully other kids that cant join every trend. its nothing personal. just leave them be.

+ i noticed a lot of them (specifically tiktok alts) say stuff like "weird people are so cool!! i love losers!!" but when they meet someone actually weird or literally just someone that isnt skinny and white (doesnt fit their ideal of a "cool alt person") they start making fun of them real quick

I 100% agree with you !! Its even weirder that people in the alt community want to be accepted and not made fun of, but then some of them go and make fun of people they deem "normal" ?? I think everyone just needs to let everyone be themselves without all the judgment, its sooo unnecessary.

i think it's not just an alt person thing but the pull yourself by the bootstraps and sheer lack of community mentality has really infiltrated across every community type. especially with how online spaces have commodified traction and followers. depends on the person and how people around them are too but idk a lot of folks act mean to prove something instead of just, proving something and it's so absolutely wack. i just wish folks were more genuine w each other. mean people are mean tho and it's pretty unnecessary unless someone else is seriously being awful or something like that

i completely understand the argument of "alt people have always been mean" but i really do feel like it's a slight mis-contextualization made by media in the 90s-2010s. the community has always been loud and firm in their ideologies, many of which encompass basic human rights. they were always mean to corruption/oppression, but being mean to a random dude just sucks. deciding to make someone's day worse literally does nothing but put you at a higher position unfairly..... kinda poser behavior if you ask me (kidding). i feel alt people were painted as mean strongly by mtv, when many of them would enter the stage to preach kindness, they were called "vile ghouls" (not making that up). i think emo being mean was just a product of a very dark and uncertain world time, and maybe we'll think the same about 2024 in a decade. as someone who had a preppy social butterfly sister around 2010, i think all the teenagers just were on edge and therefor kinda rude, because her group had the same edgy style humor as many emos did.

Basic people are really not the bullies alt people tend to shame them as. I think they happen to witness these situations where SOME basic people bark at alt people or something and assume they're all like that. About people just starting out, I'm only mean to them if they are the "I don't bother to look up shit and I ask you how you did something and expect you to give me a tutorial on how to be you", these guys annoy me sOOO MUCH. Ik they're asking genuine questions but GOD DAMN IT CAN YOU ACTUALLY TRY TO DO SOMETHING BY YOURSELF???? "omgg can I be this style if I'm x, y and z?" take a wild guess
