Dubbed as “The Most Mysterious Song on the Internet,” “Subways of Your Mind” has become famous for its “apocalyptic” sound and previously completely unknown author.
The track is believed to be first posted on the Internet on March 18, 2007, to a website called The Spirit of Radio by a user known as “bluuue” or Anton Riedel. In the post, Anton said the following:
"Recorded it 82-84 from a german radio station. Looking for singer since then :-)"
Based on the metadata from the original recording, it was captured in 1984.
The Reddit user /u/gabgaskins spread this song across the Internet in hopes of finding an answer to the mystery that has been questioned for over a decade.
However, due to the popularity given by the YouTuber Whang!, the song’s “complete” version has been found. It was discovered on July 12th, 2019 by Reddit user u/johnnymetoo.
The original (or probably demo) version of the track along with the real title “Subways of Your Mind” was found on November 4, 2024 in an old newspaper article in the Nordwest Zeitung archive by user /u/marijn1412.
It is unknown which other recordings of the track exist. The “demo” version does not appear to be similar to the one previously known, which was published in the mid-1980s in NDR2.
At least, former band member Michael Hädrich has alleged that the band will be getting together for a re-recording of the song they now learned has become iconic.
