"Omg Abby! I wanna dress super cool and get into fashion but idk where to start :'(" - I got you bestie ( ^-^ )
Most of this advice will be focused towards my style (2000s/mcbling) but it should work for any style. I'm not a super expert on all this because I'm still on my fashion journey, but hopefully this will help those just starting.
The basics, if you want to learn about the world of fashion and the industry, I recommend watching, In Vogue: The 90s, on Hulu. The 1990s was a big turning point in the fashion industry. Watching this series will def give you a lot of knowledge about how it all went down.
"But Abby, how do I find clothes in my style when they don't really sell them in stores anymore??" I recommend going to your local thrift stores. I prefer going to the smaller ones that are not Goodwill since Goodwill has been overpriced lately. When at the thrift store, make sure you are going through every piece of clothing on every rack, even if it's on a rack that's not your size or in the men's/children's section. Sometimes people will stash clothes in there or randomly put clothes back in random sections.
DON'T GIVE UP IF YOU DON'T SCORE!!! Sometimes I have bad thrift days when I only find one thing, but every once in a while I'll hit the jackpot! One time I found two pairs of Miss Me jeans, two Rock Revival jeans, and two VS Pink yoga pants, all for $20! I about cried tears on joy that day lol.
If your style is more 2000s/Mcbling, some good stores to shop at are, Burlington, Ross dress for less, TjMaxx, and Marshalls. I might be forgetting a store, but those are the ones I go to. There I've been able to find brands like Juicy Couture, Ed Hardy, and Bebe. Its all the new stuff though, so if you're looking for vintage, thrift stores are your best bet.
In the US during the summer, yard sales are also a good place to look.
If you want to shop online, check out eBay and depop. Depop can be overpriced, depending on where you shop, I like to follow sellers that sell items for a reasonable price, or when searching I put a max price in the filters.
"But I don't even know how to put together outfits or style (˚ ˃̣̣̥⌓˂̣̣̥ )" When I first started dressing in my style, I followed creators on TikTok who also had the same style, they will often post shopping, GRWM, or styling videos. I also have a whole board on Pinterest dedicated to outfit inspo, I've even been able to find clothes from those boards at the thrift!
"I wanna dress in my dream style, but I'm scared of being judged" I know it might be hard, but you just have to do it. Screw anyone who judges you! As long as you feel happy and hot, that's all that matters! There will only be one you, there will never be anyone ever in the entire universe that is exactly like you, so go out there and be yourself! Life is short, so do what makes you happy, as long as it's not harming you or others <3
