[11/04/2024] Entomology Class #2 + #3
π π π π¦ π¦ π π π π¦ π¦ πWow. I just found out that my prof is 78 yrs old. She's just a wild horse and a very inspirational person too say the least. Actually she's in her pension but the uni kindly asked her to give courses. She's just very good at her work and research field ig. Her special interest is grasshoppers.
Each lesson she gives out living insects for further inspection (if you don't want to touch em, you don't have to, she's cool about that). Today we we learned to hold a grasshopper so that it won't be hurt. I wish I could've taken a pic but it went all too fast sadly. The perfect spot for picking them up will be at the Thorax, the 2nd element of their 3 parted body.Β With thatΒ method, the won't wiggle, cannot bite you(if the could) or use their wings (but ur not touching/destructing them either)
Some times she shows special drawings and picutures with details and I sketch these onto my notepad, that's why I like these courses so much, they are pretty artsy in the sense of details and observation.
We also learned about the different types of mouthparts (Mandibels) of insects.Β Did you know, that there is a very special butterfly who sucks blood? They have a small grated tongue to scratch of surfacial food, too. WTF.
Oh, and remember that very interesting black beetle with the big horns??
Chalcosoma spp.
Here's another pic from a different angle and guys!!! Last winter I played a lot of ARK(^^) and you can tame Scarabae beetles and the look a lil similar; so I researched the Scarabae family a bit further; so this beetleΒ might beΒ calledΒ Chalocosoma chiron.Β
grasshoppers that build houses, sealing the house with a sticky substance of their mouth. I'll need to do some research @ the uni bib to find this DVD, i wanna see the whole thing. It's like the first movies ever, like small things are shown so very big on a screen, ur frightened by their sizes :PΒ

I know they aren't insects, but I spent a lot of the end of the summer just watching the slugs outside my apartment. There were SO many. For some reason they were all going inside this one tiny hole inside the outer brick of our building. The teeny babies were adorable.
