The Sims 2 vs. The Sims 3

unsolicited nerd rambling ahead c:

while i appreciate the myriad small details, the genetics system, and other features that many players cite when explaining why they prefer TS2 over later Sims games, i can't get fully into it.

most of all, i hate the S1-S2 'pheromone' system. sims act obsessed with certain objects, animations, and actions. they'll (for example) tell dirty jokes fucking CONSTANTLY, to their parents, kids, whoever. it's so frustrating and silly. i have my game modded all to hell just to be able to play it at all, and even then there's still so many little gripes that take away from my enjoyment and immersion.

meanwhile i've only ever had 1 mod (a cheaty/debuggy one) for sims 3, and still had a blast. if the game hadn't corrupted and destroyed all my files (incl. screenshots) i'd still be playing it modless to this day.

when it comes to visuals though i think sims 2 wins. with some default replacements (skin, eyes) the sims can look really good and varied in features. i prefer the pixelly 'grungey' look to smooth dollhouse-like sims and environments.

one last gripe about s2 is that you can't make properly fat characters in it :/ s3 was definitely better in that regard, although i remember the underjaw/neck area being weirdly thin on fat sims which looked odd. sims 4 is probably much better in that regard but well, EA is constantly breaking their own game with updates AND left an incest bug in for ages without addressing it sooo i'm not touching that with a ten foot pole! :p

Hands down sims 2 for me, just for the per-scripted scenarios, and lore that the game provides, this of course exists in newer games, but to a MUCH lesser extent game play wise and impact wise in my personal opinion.

The only thing that displeases me is the lack of story progression and time sync (for us more casual simmers who don't want to be forced to play on rotation)

If you're interested, LadyDuchess has a mod for story progression, and Chris Hatch made a mod for syncing community lot time (if that's what you mean by time sync)!

Love that mod! I've sadly switched to a Mac since my old laptop broke :( and I don't think she supports it.
