make/get most of your patches before you sew anything so you can pin em down in different arrangements to try different layouts, gather a bunch of reference pictures for inspiration as well
you can add extra little functions like hidden pockets or zip-off sleeves/hood
if you want to make the stitches look super clean or patterned, sew the patch down with thread the same colour as the patch first for durability then go over it again with your patterned stitch
studs, spikes, chains and safety pins make anything at least 10% cooler
