as i've taken time off the internet more and more, i've noticed that it's more fun to only be online occasionally. this was sparked by the need to spend less time on twitter, since it's become an absolute cesspit since elon musk bought it. within the time that he's owned it, i've been reported by terfs (after they called me mentally ill, btw) and another time, got attacked by neo nazis for saying nazism is bad (literally all i said). very recently, i've moved to bluesky.
now i'm on twitter even less, only using my private account anymore, and i'll soon be deleting my accounts since elon musk will be feeding everyone's content to his ai bot. during the shift to bluesky, i've spent less time online, only using it to occasionally look at cute cats on bluesky, vent on my private account, message irl friends on instagram, and now, fixing up my spacehey account and posting the occasional blog.
while being offline more, i've noticed that i feel better in some ways. i still use the internet as an escape, because my living situation is dogshit at the moment (living with transphobic family and having to be closeted, not to mention being antagonized 24/7). but i've felt more hope lately (mainly since i'll be graduating community college soon and will then go to live at university) and i've noticed that i sleep better. when it's nighttime i get off of social media and i listen to music to go to sleep. it's worked wonders.
when the internet is treated like an occasional treat, life is a bit more bearable. it also helps to distance yourself from toxic platforms and users online. while i understand using the internet as an escape, since i do, too, i think it's important to find balance if possible. in fact, i've felt better even just using my internet time on youtube instead of other platforms, since i only watch videos on youtube and don't make many comments.
if, like me, you've found that the internet has only been making you feel worse lately (especially since election day is coming, people of all political leanings on twitter are being very toxic about it), i encourage you to find balance between being online and offline and if you can, hanging out with irl friends more!
i leave you with this cute image of a rat <3
