Niccy's Song Of The Day #5: Moanin' by Mingus Big Band

We've got our first Jazz song so far and it's Moanin' by Mingus Big Band, which is actually a Big Band cover of Moanin' by Charles Mingus. As the name implies Mingus Big Band mainly focuses on big ensemble covers of compositions created by the late great CHARLES MINGUS.

I chose this particular track because its what introduced me to the band, and by extension Mingus' other works. I can honestly say that if it weren't for that discovery I most likely would not have gotten as much into jazz as I have. I consider it my gateway drug into the broader world of jazz.

It's one of those songs that just never ever leaves my playlists no matter how much I listen to it. There's just so much to love about it, starting with that intense and satisfying bari sax intro which leads into an ever increasing cacophony of noise that just continues to build up and up!  Also the way each instrument goes off on its own every now and then and yet it all still manages to sound cohesive is seriously impressive!
