The video "ingrate" by Meatsleep has been online for a very long time. This video is part of a larger group of videos (also called arg) by the same creator. Although the series has been discontinued because of unclear reasons (either the creators got accused of being actually murderers, or the person behind the account decided to stop posting), ingrate is one of the most important and scariest of their videos. Posted 8 years ago, in 2016, it became quite known all over 4chan. But what made this video so scary ? One of the biggest reasons is the general feeling of the video, but other factors such as the story behind it and the imagery contribute a lot to the uneasy feeling we get while watching the video.
First of all, the general sound ambiance of the video is scary. Between the stressing background noises and the robotic voice, our mind is filled with stress. The weird buzzing noises in the heavy atmosphere and the irregular cracking noises are really impactful in the mind of the viewer. The fact the voice is a robotic one and not an actual human one is also unsettling. It makes us wonder who is the person behind the video and tons of other questions. The ambiance is so harsh that the viewer is constantly wondering is there will be a jumpscare or not.
The things that are said are also very disturbing. It seems the voice is speaking to an unknown person, an ungrateful person. They let them live in this basement that is very foul and dirty and presumably escaped, causing the narrator to make this video, presumably being angry. He says striking words such as "a place to clean your disgusting body" and "i loved you like a person". These two sentences are not one after the other but their meanings are impacting. The person behind the account is trying to seem like a savior, whilst degrading and placing the escaped person in horrible conditions. This is further said at the beginning, when the owner of the basement says "i gave you a home" or "i feed you", as if trying to tell the maybe kidnapped person he did so much for them and that they should feel grateful. Another imagery is the repetition of the sentence "you live here", which is repeated five times. This makes the video feel even heavier, because while the video shows a disgusting, repulsing basement, the voice keeps on repeating how someone lived here.
The last massive and intriguing part of the video is the imagery. The videos are filmed with a very low quality camera, and the person who films appear to be trembling, as if they arent stable, either physically or mentally. This crazy person who films also seems to use a flicking light, which reinforces the scariness of the video. But the most scary part of the videos is the place filmed. A horrid, rancid and disgusting basement, filled with wires, dirty brushes and puddles of an unknown liquid. Another prominent moment is when the voice says "i cleaned you", the video shows a bottle of bleach. This may indicate that not only the poor person kidnapped was forced to stay in filthy conditions, but also tortured. At last, at the very end, at the top of the stairs, we can see a figure with eyes that reflect light. Whether this is a animal or a monster is unclear, but it does give a weird impression, given that during the whole video, we saw nothing human or even living, until the end.
In conclusion, everything in "ingrate" is scary. The sounds, the imagery and the story that is being said. In my opinion, it is one of the scariest short videos online to this day. In less than a minute, the video manages to scare us. I would like to conclude with the fact that this is the only Meatsleep video I have seen, so the actual meaning behind this video might be different from what I said. This is just an analysis of one video, not the whole arg.
