1. Cavegirl and The Neandergals- Carnal Desires (2024, Western Star Records)
For a while, psychobilly lost the strange amalgam of old-style genres popularized by Hasil Adkins, The Cramps, and others. Cavegirl and the Neandergals' Carnal Desires really puts the BLUES back into the psychobilly format. I cannot stop gushing about how well they have infused the ideals of psychobilly with those genres; whether its using lap-steel guitars or recording with all 50s/60s equipment live, they never fail to hold the essence of what they do. I have been following them for a good while, close to when they began, and they have grown so much! They seriously deserve a lot of love for their primal sexual lyrics and real wild music (although one of their songs kind of sounds too much like "Stray Cat Strut" lol).
2. Vince Ray and His Bone-Shakers- Boneshaker Baby (2007, Raucous Records)
I remember learning about Vince from a documentary about legendary barber Mr. Ducktail and the history of U.K. bill in a modern context. Vince Ray feels like an establishment for modern U.K. psychobilly. I can’t think of something so fused every-which-way with all the influences you’d expect. The blues-ier tone of Ray with the wild distorted mania, provides the perfect sound for a couple of great covers (“Cast Iron Arm” and “All Women Are Bad") and some sonic-pleasure in original tunes. These tracks were real hot in my early days of psychobilly listening and I still revisit a few tracks that make this dog hot.
3. Demented Are Go- I Wanna See You Bleed!! (2000, Hellraiser Records)
I am biased in this review because Transsexual Lesbian is not only a pin of this dogwolf’s character (kind of), but it is one of my all-time favorite psychobilly tracks. It feels only right in my first set of UK reviews to give this (underrated) album its spotlight. We all know Sparky’s vocals are the pinnacle of that sexy growl and that the frenetic pace the bass takes with some great backing guitar make Demented Are Go uber special. I think the song list is a refreshing batch of new-millennium sex and debauchery and it makes me want more and more. Thankfully, there’s an extended version online with live in Tokyo sets and beauties like “Anal Wonderland” gracing any listeners ears. Whether its 4 or 20 songs, this EP is absolutely killer and a great follow-up listen to their debut.
