ACTUALLY DEVASTATING.... I WAS STARING AT THE WALL IN SHOCK FOR A SOLID MINUTE AFTER FINISHING...
ok now enough of the drama and on to the actual opinions.
So! I’ve heard some negative reviews about this book, mainly being that like, the characters were too one sided? Like Benji just being a trans boy and not much more, or Nick just being autistic and while in some parts it felt a bit, hm, stereotypical to me? I didn’t find it generally bothersome, and like, it does very much make sense that it would focus a lot on Benji’s transness, its like, kind of a big plotpoint, in addition to, really, being a big part of my life as well as a trans person. Some months barely a day goes by without me noticing it. For someone raised in a bigoted cult enviorment I imagine queerness and any sort of difference from the norm they’ve been raised in would be a big deal. And again, it was only in a few select lines that I even noticed it.
What I did very much notice though, was the incredible enviorment descriptions. The gruesome details of the churches, streets, and of the graces and Seraph made me feel as if I could be standing right there in the Reformation Faith Evangelical Church myself. Really, it was the highlightof the book for me.
And, ermmm,,,, about the ending…… Oh god..
So I was reading it in the school library, waiting for my friend. I SWEAR i was a DIFFERENT person after. God it just altered my brain chemistry .. It really like, made me appreciate my friends just a little bit more yk?
soo.. in conclusion i rly loved this book! totes recommend!!!!!
