Transformers One Review

Movie Review!

Transformers One

This is the first review I'll post so it'll be amateurish, poorly formatted, and will probably contain unintentional spoilers in the non spoiler sections.

Transformers One was a movie that was set up to fail when it comes to making a profit. The marketing especially the initial trailer was awful It did such a poor job of conveying what the movie is actually about. That first trailer made this look like a really crappy animated kids comedy which did it no favors.

Spoiler Free Thoughts

Upon watching it though I was pleasantly surprised with a competent movie that feels like something anyone of any age could enjoy. With a tight pacing that moves at a near break neck speed without overwhelming you, fitting in just enough character moments, action and plot the brisk 104 minute run time of Transformers One is just enough, it doesn't drag on and it doesn't leave you feeling like more could be done in the Movie. Animation wise the trailers looked a bit off, but upon actually watching the move its a gorgeous animated movie with a vibrant and unique style which is incredibly expressive and fluid. The character designs themselves can be hit or miss the main cast, initially in the opening section of the movie the main characters look rather odd but for the plot it will make sense later on. The plot itself is simple and easy to follow it works for this movie it wont blow you away but it does exactly what it needs to do. Performance wise everyone in this movie does a fantastic job but the obvious standouts to me are John Hamm as Sentinel Prime, who really does a great job being a condescending power hungry asshole he really sells it. The other standout is Brian Tyree Henry as D-16 I wasn't sold on his casting at first, however upon watching the movie I'm so sorry I doubted him. He absolutely stands above the rest of the cast as an astounding performance he sells all the emotion and rage in his voice. The theatre went silent on some of his line deliveries. It's genuinely one of the best performances in an animated movie I've seen. The dialogue was overall solid it was definitely elevated by the performances. A lot of the dialogue between D-16 and Orion Pax is just along the lines of "Oh aren't we such good friends" as if kids couldn't understand they were good friends. The humour in this movie is incredibly hit or miss and it mostly misses for me to be honest. Particularly the Badassatron bit they kept trying with B-17 (Bumblebee) most of his jokes and bits do not land. B-17 was probably the worst part of the movie for me he was a pretty poor comic relief and didn't really do much as a character beyond trying to be funny. All I wish the movie did was maybe spend a little more time on some of the characters to flesh them out some more devoting less time to the stellar action. Overall Transformers One is a solid package that doesn't waste your time and is worth seeing in theatres if you can especially if you're a transformers fan like me. There's lots of little nods and cameos for you to point at the screen and soyface over.

This was originally going to be a much more comprehensive review and I will come back and do that. It's just this got far too bloated when I went into the spoiler territory talking about the plot and I didn't have the energy to trim it down so instead for now I'm just keeping the spoiler free thoughts. But this is a first review and I hope to improve over time and make the plot section far less bloated. I want to make more of these for just everything I like since I enjoy sharing my thoughts on things.
