i fucking hate the tiktok fashion community

tiktok has done irreparable damage to peoples perception of fashion. ive been seeing a lot of videos on my fyp that are basically like "why be basic when you can be scene/goth/emo/coquette/whateverthefuckelseistrendyatthetime, lifes too short" and you can just tell that none of these people have a personality outside of 'being unique'. people on that app seem to put so much emphasis on being different that they fail to realise they look the exact same as everyone else which would be fine if they didnt try so hard to be 'weird' and 'not basic' like?? i guess fashion is a uniqueness competition now instead of, you know, it being a cool way to express yourself like it should be...

and the way next to none of these people can be normal for five fucking minutes is insane. youll either come across the 'i wanna be [insert style] but...' people who cant even be bothered to the the most basic of digging into the style they claim to be so interested in or the ones who are so painfully pretentious and think theyre the shit for owning the most hideous 'underground' designer brand pieces and i cant decide which is worse. on 1 side you have the people who are actively killing subcultures and stripping them of any semblance of meaning they once had, watering them down into nothing but soulless shells of aesthetics, on the other side you have the most insufferable people to walk the earth, both terrifying in their own right.

and speaking of not being able to act normal, why can no one do things for themselves anymore?? if i had a dollar for every time i saw someone say some dumb shit to an alternative person id be bill gates. if you have the audacity to dress slightly different youll probably be asked things like; 'i want to be [insert style] but im scared' 'how do i be [insert style] if i have x, y and z??'. constantly. and i get that these people mean no harm but OH MY DAYS its so fucking annoying. i know that theyre only looking for advice but the only advice that can be given in most cases is just 'either you do it or you dont, no ones making you if you really dont want to'. its almost like theyre looking for you to give them a detailed tutorial on how to be you just tailored for their situation, like theyre expecting it, when you probably cant give that to them because youre just not them. the easiest way to dress how you want is to just go for it, experiment with it. while youre definitely going to have some questionable outfits thats just what you have to do to have a cool style and i feel like that should be common sense.

tiktok has only been around for 6 years, insanely popular like it is now for 4, and yet its done so much damage to fashion and how people participate in it, its honestly impressive. in its 6 year run it has managed to: kill off sub cultures, speed up the trend cycle, impact peoples views on quality and allow brands to lower their standards, narrow peoples views on existing styles, turn fashion into a uniqueness contest and breed the most insufferable people and its still nowhere near done. and again, i think its impressive in a way, in all the hundreds of thousands of years of human history i dont think anything as seemingly insignificant has impacted fashion in such an absolutely huge way as tiktok has in its 6 year (and counting) run.

Looking back though, it almost seems like this was destined to happen. Tiktok by its very nature is a uniqueness contest to see who can get the most viewer retention to be boosted in the algorithm. So it makes sense that people are trying to be as unique as possible at the cost of whatever they are imitating. I bet that in the next 4 years, fashion on Tiktok will be a mindless slop of half ai generated content that has no value beyond getting views and clout for their creators.

i feel like these people are always trying to be “different” in the most “normal” way possible, like in my school someone might call themselves really goth because they wear a black plain hoodie and just regular jeans like bro i dunno whats goth about you, you look like everyone else here

also by the way just delete tiktok, its refreshing and way healthier

oh by the way i also feel like they just skip the hurting part. almost every alternative or “weird” person has gone trough a certain period of being scared or getting bullied for it like.. we just all have something of battle scars and then they stroll up in their nike clothes and be like “yo that looks cool” and try to be like that while skipping the painful part

I agree. It feels less like self-expression and more like trying on different costumes

I'm tired of labels, aesthetics, and cores in general. Why does every style need a name, and why should we have to put ourselves in boxes to fit in with mainstream society? I have seen so many people say something like "i need help finding my aesthetic!". All of these styles and labels only look like flavored or customizable products that you buy. "It's giving blank blank blank" "blank-core" "this or that".

Sadly is not only the style, they also put in moda be trans, like for me is tolerable be coquette, scene or any style, but a gender, even being autistic is so annoying because TikTok people just take everything so serious or a simple joke. They don't have a normal life in my pov

I agree with this so much. I feel like TikTok is ruined fashion and subcultures. Also why is there a new aesthetic or core every 2 days like "mafia wife core" or "angel/devil core".What the hell is "angel/devil core what"?Anyways theres a new aesthetic or trend every 2 days and then the trend is over when the week ends like thats crazy.

yes like it kills me. i see many people saying they can't diy clothing because it'll look "unprofessional" or they're not "talented" enough, but i feel like that's not the reason any of us got into this. sure we all like looking cool, but we explored fashion being a reflection of our beings as little kids when we'd play dress up. in the 80s and 90s people were messy and imperfect and did their own thing, because "being punk" wasn't about having a studded jacket, it was about rejecting conformity and embracing what makes you different from others. also the politics but that's another story. in 2020 i used to obsesses over microtrends and hopped labels, to be left feeling stupid when i realized it's just having fun. everyone has a style, just make what you like or thrift it and throw it on. i made some really crappy tshirts after and i'll never regret going out wearing them, because i got to do something for the sake of being myself. gerard way messed up his hair dye and now it's a trend. be silly and you never know where opportunity will hit

ESTOOO, he pensado lo mismo durante mucho tiempo, es increíble como se ha distorsionado una visión tan amplia como la moda en cosas tan básicas y vacías.

Ughh THIS!!! I don't even have TikTok but the amount to shit that's come out of it is actually unreal... Plus, with the whole 'uniqueness' thing, it is SO annoying that ppl try so hard to be 'weird' or 'unique'... Like that's not you. You won't be able to keep that act up. PLUS leather jackets!!! A silly lil thing ik but when all the 'popular' girls wear them to school, nobody bats an eye, but the second my friend, who's actually alt, wears a leather jacket she gets bullied??? Its insane I swear

She rants to me a lot about fast fashion & the effect TikTok has in the Alt community and it's honestly so interesting and sad- I mean, I don't have a label for myself, but it all just annoys me so much??? Second hand rage almost
