Why is it that in this generation, or more broadly in modern times, dating is so hard?

For instance, you're subjected to getting to know someone through an app; whether it's a dating app, snapchat or instagram. On these apps you are to then decide over a phone (if you guys don't meet up straight away due to multiple reasons i am sure) if you are even mildly interested in this person. How?

I am not asking how because i am confused; i have gone through this myself and can gain attraction for someone long distance online.

I am more confused when people are actually close to each other irl, as this way of gaining interest in people for the purpose of dating is weird. Especially when most people my age find the spectacle of dating and love to be exchanging explicit photos and losing interest if a person wants to be exclusive.

I'm not sure if it's just because I don't go out that often, but I don't think I'm going to have that much luck with dating.
