Fish of the Day 27 - I got that blobfish in me,,

Today's second fish of the day is the blobfish! Such an insulting name, I am very upset right now on behalf of this poor fish!!!!!

Blobfish, facts and information

Blobfish facts

- You're probably looking at the picture i chose and wondering why it isn't what looks like a glob of slimy pink mucus. Well that's how an actual blobfish looks!!! When the photo was originally taken, there wasn't much info on this creature! So, this fish was removed from the ocean so quickly that it damaged it's body tissue. It's soft, boneless and nearly muscleless body is suited for the high pressures of the deep sea, so it doesn't adapt well to the sudden pressure change. It's used to up to 120x the pressure we have on land, which is enough to easily crush us. The pressure provides it's body the support that bones would usually give it. The picture most are familiar with is, in reality, a heavily injured blobfish! :(

- Because of the previous fact, scientists struggle to study blobfish. No tests have ever been run on blobfish, and the information we do have is simply obtained by observing it in it's habitat and examining the corpses brought up to the surface. The former happens very rarely, too.

- Most fish have a swim bladder, which helps keep them afloat. However, because blobfish do not have bone or muscle to weigh them down, they don't need one! They instead float using their skin... somehow

- Talking about skin, the blobfish doesn't actually have scales. Their skin is similar to ours.

- When "hunting", they've been observed not moving much... they practically wait for food to come to it! This isn't surprising considering their lack of muscles.

- Scientists believe these animals are endangered, but due to their rarity, it's hard to say! Sadly, the same could be said for many other elusive marine creatures.

Do you got that blobfish in you? Honestly, even after doing research, I feel like saying you relate to this fish is self-deprecation.
