Fish of the Day 26 - I got that cuttlefish in me!!!!!

Today's fish of the day is one of my FAVOURITESSS,, the cuttlefish!! I LOVE CUTTLEFISH

Cuttlefish facts:

- There are around 120 species of cuttlefish, which can be found (ALMOST) anywhere in the world! 

- Like their octopus and squid relatives... the cuttlefish doesn't have any bones. However, they posess an internal shell called a "cuttlebone". This shell is porous, and has many small chambers that hold gases. These gases help give cuttlefish some buoyancy!

- Cuttlefish have the special ability to change their colours/appearence based off of their surroundings, thanks to having specialized cells in their skin. They can undergo these transformations in roughly 0.2 seconds, so if you blink you might miss it!

- These creatures are VERY smart. They have one of the largest brain to body rations among all invertebrets, and they have shown to be quick learners. In 2021, a test was conducted where cuttlefish were exposed to a variation of the marshmellow test, a well-known psychological test involving self restraint. The cuttlefish learnt very quickly how the test worked, and they passed it!

- Cuttlefish are able to move using jet propulsion. 

- Apparently, a recent study has shown that cuttlefish may have the ability to have dreams like us. Considering how intelligent they are, it wouldn't surprise me!

- Just like the octopus, cuttlefish have 3 hearts that constantly pump their blue blood. Their blood appears blue because it has lots of hemocyanin, a protein containing copper!

- Despite being colorblind, cuttlefish arguably have better vision than humans. They can detect light we can't, and thanks to their W shaped pupils, they can see in every direction, even from behind!

- Finally, they spend around 95% of their time resting and being lazy. Honestly.... me too!
