This is my first Final Fantasy game (not counting the time I played a little bit of FF 4 as a shitty little child).
I decided to play the original PS1 version of the game since I don’t fuck with HD models on really low-res backgrounds.
I don’t know what compelled me to give it a go. It was kinda just an impulse decision as I was scrolling through CDromance.
I’ve heard pretty good things about it in the past so I though why the hell not.
It’s a very pretty game, especially for PS1 and the story is pretty good so far too.
The FMVs are really fucking pretty too. Square really hit it out of the park with the art direction.
The
music’s pretty great as well, though I think it’s funny how when the
game is loading, you can hear a very slight hitch in the midi.
The battle theme’s pretty catchy and I like how a lot of the soundtrack is pretty mellow.
As for the gameplay, the only issues I have had were related to the way the battle camera and cursor work. The camera was very distracting and I thought that selecting characters by moving the cursor over them was very clunky. Thankfully there were options to disable both, and it made it infinitely more playable and really saves precious seconds navigating menus.
I also think the Ability system is fucking genius. It’s pretty cool having a sort of risk-reward type thing going on with your equipment and how your party members learn stuff as the game goes on. It’s pretty darn neat and makes me restrategize going into certain fights.
I might make another post about this once I get even further into the game to give an updated opinion, as i’m only about 7-8 hours in so far (Just entered Burmecia), but so far it’s been pretty damn good.
Tips are welcome, just no spoilers.
