Hi Spacehey! Today, I'd like to show off my backpack pins. I'm hoping that you guys will appreciate them. I've noticed that barely anyone else at my university has backpack pins-- they instead opt for laptop stickers. Scroll down to see the images!
I had to cross out two of them that exposed location-specific information. Many of my pins were actually given to me by my grandmother, which I circled in the second picture. She collected pins, and was involved with various leftist causes in the '60s and '70s. They serve as a reminder of the leftist activist tradition, and to visit her regularly.
The little hand on the top part is Thing from The Addams Family. Yes, I love The Addams Family. I'm going as Gomez Addams this Halloween, and my girlfriend is going as Morticia Addams. The dragon to the left is the symbol of the Dragonborn. Its from one of my favorite games, Skyrim.
The one with a devil on it is from a freaky movie called Glen or Glenda from 1953. I watched it because it was directed by the notorious Ed Wood, and David Lynch cited it as an inspiration. There's not much I can say about it besides that its one of the weirdest things I have ever seen, and that you need to watch it for yourself. I was very surprised when I saw someone selling pins with images from Glen or Glenda, and the guy selling them said no one had ever bought one.
The sad looking man on the bottom left is silent-era comedian Buster Keaton. I actually bought this online from the international Buster Keaton fan club. They have a yearly gathering... someday I will have to go see one for myself. My brother gave me the Eraserhead one as a gift. It is a reproduction of a pin that people apparently wore to show that they had seen Eraserhead. I'm not quite sure what it indicates about a person, but I would like to be included.
Lavender Menace was a term used to describe radical lesbian feminists in the '70s. It is inspired by prominent feminist Betty Friedan's disdain for lesbians, as it uses her words. The Lambda symbol is also a historic symbol for gay liberation.
If anyone has other questions, ask in the comments! In my last year of college, I have finally completely covered the surface of my backpack. I am quite proud.
