With an average of 12 humans killed per years, sharks are pretty inoffensive to humans. A shark is a type of fish with a cartilaginous skeleton, different fin placement and a different form of scales. Being vulnerable means that they are sensible to being attacked or even killed by other species or in this case, humans. We will see in the oceans and even on land, how they get taken away or killed from their natural habitat nowadays. How these huge fish-eating creatures are getting killed and kidnapped by us ? First of all, we will see how they are killed to eat, especially for their fins. Then, how some of them are taken for aquariums, which can be good and bad. And finally, how they get stuck inside fishing nets, even when they're not the ones getting fished.
First and foremost, in some countries, sharks get killed to be eaten. In countries of Asia and more specifically in China, sharks fins are either used as medicine or the soup made with it is considered a delicacy. This causes a lot of harmful fishing for the sharks species. But fishing for fins isn't just killing the shark and cutting its fin off. Instead, the fishers catch the shark, cut its fin off and throw it back into the sea. This causes the shark to either bleed out in the sea and eventually die, or for them to get attacked by other creatures. This is much more efficient for the fishers, not having to take care of tons of shark carcasses. But this is just as harmful for sharks, making them still die.
Another reason for their vulnerability is how they get taken away from their natural habitat, either to be sent to zoos and aquariums, or private aquariums. The zoos and aquariums, even if they take away sharks from their natural environment, at least try to preserve a semblant of good living conditions, where sharks can swim, eat and reproduce. They also do a job at showing to the public what sharks are like and raise awareness at how sharks are forced to live and how we can protect them. There is also another place where sharks can get kidnapped. They can get taken for private aquariums. The sharks from private aquariums either come from fish banks, where sharks reproduce and are kept in captivity their whole lives, either come from illegal trafficking and fishing.
Another problem shark population face is getting caught in fishing nets. In theory, they should be released and if they are dangerous sharks, they get sent further into to the sea, where they wont hurt anyone. But most fishers don't go through the trouble of releasing the fish without hurting it. Another net problem are sharks nets. These are basically nets to stop sharks from going into the shores. This happens especially in Australia. It kills them by drowning them. But are these really effective ? This not only kills sharks but a lot of whales also get stuck inside the nets and left to die. These nets don't only represent a menace to sharks but also other species of the littoral.
Sharks are endangered by human activity in many different ways. Not only are they overfished but also are taken away from their natural habitat and get caught in fishing nets. We have to protect these species else they'll go extinct. Their extinction would be terrible for the biodiversity since sharks are one of the main natural predators in the food chains.
