Today's fish of the day is the Royal Gramma!
Royal gramma facts:
- These are very popular fish for aquariums, due to being easy to take care of and their vibrant colours. It is also notably passive, unlike another fish with a similar appearance known as the royal dottyback. (AKA the false gramma! Like fools gold)
- In the wild, they act as cleaner fish, feeding off of other creature's parasites. They also eat plankton and small crustaceans.
- One unique thing the royal gramma does is swim upside down! This behavior will sometimes scare new gramma owners, but it's completely normal. In the wild, they swim upside down on ledges of rock in coral reefs.
- These creatures can be found in groups, some groups with as many as 100 individuals!
- Apparently, its the males in this species who take care of/protect the eggs, similarly to seahorses.
- Unlike some other species which are common in aquariums, this species is surprisingly unpopular in the aquarium trade, which helps them stay far from being endangered. They are able to breed in captivity so there isn't much of a need for them to be taken from the wild.
Do you got that gramma in you? I think MAYBE I do. It sort of resonates with me..
