Today's sea creature of the day is the scallop! what a marvelous creature
Scallop facts:
- The scallop has one special ability that most mollusks lack: by pumping water through their body and jetting it out their rear end, they are able... to FLY! (click here for the video)
- To prioritize their mobility, the simple scallop has a rather lightweight and thin shell. Because of it's lack in strength, it's shell is instead used more for camoflauge than protection.
- Those little blue beads that line this creature's shell are it's eyes! It can have up to 200. However, despite having a staggering amount of eyes, they can only detect movement and light.
- Scallops are 80% protein, and are very low calorie. I hate to say this on my sea creature blog, but,,, they're pretty good for diets!
- Unlike other mollusks, they cannot fully close their shells.
- The rings on a scallop's shell indicates its age, every ring being equivalent to one year. Scallops can live up to 20 years, so thats's probably the most ring's you'd ever find on one.
Im obsessed with that crazy scallop video omg. Anyway do you have that scallop in you? I have the flying ones in me, they are so fun and cute looking!
