May

May (2002), directed by Lucky McKee, is a creepy and intense horror movie about a girl who just doesn’t fit in. May, played by Angela Bettis, is super awkward and shy, and no matter how hard she tries, she never seems to be understood by anyone around her. She’s been lonely her whole life, partly because of this lazy eye she had as a kid that made her feel different. Because of that, she never learned how to really connect with people, and that’s a huge part of why she’s so messed up.

Throughout the movie, you can see her trying to make friends, but it always goes wrong. Whether it’s her crush (Jeremy Sisto) or her coworker (Anna Faris), nobody gets her. They all just find her weird or creepy, even though all she really wants is someone to accept her. This constant rejection makes her even more obsessed with creating the “perfect friend” out of the best parts of people she meets, because she’s so desperate to feel like she belongs.

May’s loneliness and the way she’s misunderstood by everyone are what make this movie so sad and unsettling. It’s not just about horror—it’s about how isolating it can be when no one understands you. The horror comes from how far she’s willing to go to finally make a connection with someone, and by the end, it gets really dark.

If you like psychological horror that dives into the feeling of being completely alone, May is definitely for you. It’s sad, disturbing, and gives you a lot to think about, especially about how it feels to be different and not understood by anyone.
