˚ੈ♡˳Portrait of a Lady on Fire˚ ༘𓆩♡𓆪 ⋆。

hello!! today I’m here to tell you about 'Portrait of a Lady on Fire' and share a bit of what I think about this movie ♡♡♡

among the queer films, we have Portrait of a Lady on Fire, directed by CÉLINE SCIAMMA, which chooses to showcase the power of femininity and intimacy within the film. its two main protagonists are played by NOEMI MERLANT (Marienne) and ADÈLE HAENEL (Héloïse), who portray these female lovers from the 18th century

this film was released in 2019 and is a romance and drama that transports us to the 18th century to tell the story of a portrait artist. the film mostly focuses on Marienne and Héloïse; the other characters that appear are merely background figures and do not hold much significance.

'*•.¸♡ SYNOPSIS

Marianne is a painter who receives a very special commission: to paint Héloïse, who has just left the convent and is about to get married. this wedding portrait must be done without her knowing, so Marianne will observe her daily

'*•.¸♡ THEMES ADDRESSED

  • references to painting
  • portraiture as a discipline
  • abortion
  • the convent as an approach to the imaginary of freedom and equality
  • love and desire

'*•.¸♡ SYMBOLISM

throughout the film, the shots present the scenes as if they were true works of art, gradually immersing us in the culture of art. the absence of men during the film creates a more feminine and intimate atmosphere; moreover, the closer the protagonists grow to each other, the more intimate the shots become.

at one point in the film, they join a female community and dance around a bonfire, which reminds me of a witch's sabbath. these sabbaths were rituals that witches used to connect with nature, with the other women in the coven, and with themselves, often as a form of protective ritual. if we analyze the moment closely, it's precisely when the protagonists connect with each other, which I interpret as a clear symbol of their connection.

'*•.¸♡ PERSONAL OPINION

Portrait of a Lady on Fire' is a very beautiful and visually captivating film. after watching it, I can't help but think about page 88 and everything behind it. it’s a very calm and silent movie, but what’s most important isn’t what’s said, but what’s shown. it’s a very serene film, to be honest.

personally, I liked it, although, to be honest, it can be a bit boring if you watch it without doing anything else. also, one thing I would change is the +18 scene that occurs in the middle of the film; it’s too explicit and feels more like an adult film. other than that, I think it’s very well crafted (especially since there are no men) and, moreover, it’s visually stunning (if you don’t fall asleep, of course).

I hope you decide to watch this movie and let me know what you think
