This is the third eel entry of this blog. If you love eels, check out Fish of the Day 2 and 2.5!
Today's second fish of the day is the humble spotted garden eel. These things are very silly!
Spotted garden eel facts:
- The spotted garden eel loves the comfort of its home. They burrow holes in the sand, and they stay in the same hole for most of their life. They are very curious, constantly sticking their heads out of their said burrows. But as soon as danger is spotted, they immedietely retreat!
- Despite staying in the same spot for such a long time, they are not solitary creatures. They live in giant colonies that can have hundreds of even thousands of other garden eels!
- Their bodies secrete a sort of mucus, which acts as a cement and ensures their hole won't collaspe.
- Once reaching adulthood, the only time they leave their little hidey hole is for mating. And even then, they mostly just move to a hole slightly closer to their mate!! x)
- You must be wondering, if they don't move from their hole, what do they eat? They eat floating zooplankton that unfourtunately encountered the eel colony.
This is quite the silly eel! Do you got that garden eel in you? I think i identify with this creature very much.
