Firstly, I apologize for not posting recently. I sadly didn't have motivation to do these blogs... BUT WE'RE SO BACK!!
Today's fish of the day is the leafy seadragon! (Also adorably known as "leafies")
leafy seadragon facts:
- These are the leafbugs of the sea. The leafy seadragon is a master of camoflauge, disguising itself as seaweed! It is rare to encounter, and it's ability to blend into it's enviroment makes it even more ellusive.
- Despite being related to seahorses, which are mostly quite small, these creatures can grow up to 1ft! Every image I see of this species makes them look much smaller than they really are, i find.
- They don't have a proper tail fin, making this fish quite slow. However, they do have a good sense of direction, which makes up for it.
- Just like the sea horse, male leafy seadragons carry eggs. Though, because they lack a pouch, they store them near their tail.
- There is a species similar to this one, called the weedy seadragon. That species has a considerably smaller amount of "leaves"!
- Another interesting ability this fish has is the ability to change it's skin colour, depending on the depth of the water its in, along with the colour of seagrass in the area. This helps it's already impressive hiding skills!
- This species is the official marine emblem of South Australia.
I think this is a very pretty and unique fish, and thankfully, i was able to find tons of information about it (unlike some of the previous fish...)
Do you got that seadragon in you?
