The city of Mumbai in India is a metropolis in fast development, ever since 1950, the city almost doubled in size. A global city means a city which in well adapted to the links of globalisation. The setting of this essay is Mumbai, in India. But how is Mumbai a global metropolis, marked by inequalities, that is growing ? First of all, we will see how the suburbs are really rich, then how there is a lot of transportation and finally, the inequalities of the slums and the poverty that rules there.
The outskirts of Mumbai are really attractive, for multiple reasons. To begin with, the suburbs of Mumbai contain important cultural facilities, such as Bollywood Studio cinemas like the SJ Studio Bollywood, near one of the rich neighborhoods of Mumbai or the business districts, right under the airport. Another reason the outskirts of Mumbai are really attractive are because of neighborhoods like Bandra. Bandra is a very chic neighborhood which attracts "Bollywood stars, influencers, hipsters and expatriates" after the document "Gentrification. L'economie indienne vue a travers un quartier de Mumbai" published in an international letter. It wasnt always like this. Naresh Fernandes, a CEO, says that the city ony started developing twenty years ago. This proves the fast development of the city.
The city of Mumbai is global not only because of its big attractivity but also because of of its transportation. With a big port in the historic center and an aeroport in the middle of the city, we can say that Mumbai is a global city since it is connected to other metropolis around the world. There are also a lot of expatriates in Mumbai. This shows that the city attracts flux from other countries because of its high cultural and economic values.
Lastly, Mumbai is filled with inequalities. Not only are there a lot of business districts, but there also exists slums in Mumbai. An example of this is the Kaula Bandar, a slum that is not recognized by Mumbai. The average of housings with a direct access to drinkable water is around 0.1% of the housings, while in the average slums that are recognized by Mumbai, this number goes up to 99.7% of housings. This also shows that the metropolis refuses to acknowledge some of its bad sides and try to change. There is also a huge difference between the price of a square meter in Bandra (rich neighborhood mentioned earlier) and the rest of Mumbai. A square meter in Bandra costs on average 4400 roupies while, on the contrary, an average square meter costs 2200 roupies in the rest of Mumbai.
In conclusion, the city of Mumbai is a global city in development but marked by inequalities. The outskirts of the city are very attractive, with important cultural facilities and rich neighborhoods. It is also attractive because of its transportation and fast development. However, this huge development is also filled with inequalities that the city struggles to acknowledge.
