BLOOD HARVEST
(1987)
Readers, I am playing some catch up right now. I've seen a lot of movies I haven't written about. So forgive me if my memory is a little hazy on these next few. Blood Harvest, I thought, could be a bit of a drag! There is a pretty obvious trope subversion that I don't want to get into. What I would like to say, however, is that the character Mervo is so much fun. He's played by Tiny Tim and each random scene featuring him is handled with a tremendous amount of care. He's an amateur clown with a lovely singing voice, naturally, and there is this one small part of the movie that I'd like to discuss for a moment. I'm pretty sure it is the preview when you hover over the film on Tubi. The Marvelous Mervo sings on his knees under a large cross at the front of an empty church. His arms outstretch as he begs to be made pure, the camera closing in on his face while he sobs under his breath. I find the way Tiny Tim chooses to contort his face while his character cries just so absolutely captivating for whatever reason. And there is this clip that holds his hair back, away from his imperfectly drawn face paint. This scene lies between two uninteresting clips of the main character, Jill, being startled by this and that. It comes entirely out of the blue. I'm not sure if you personally are willing to sit through so much filler to enjoy a few minutes of clown, but if that is your sort of thing... There are some decent kills as well, but I didn't enjoy the man behind them enough to be fully invested.
"Marvelous Mervo, at your service
Marvelous Mervo, that's my name
I'll do my best to entertain you
With magic and laughter, 'cause that's my game"
