My Fav Songs -> The Sea Is a Good Place - Los Campesinos!

okay, so i am going to start analyzing my fav songs on here because why not.

i have many favorite songs, some idk if i could ever analyze cause theres just so much I could say tbh. some of them are so personal to me, like "thick skull" by paramore- that is one of my all time favs but idk if it will ever be featured on this blog.

This song is a mix of personal and also i just think its perfect - The Sea is a Good Place To Thjink of the Future by Los Campesinos! - trigger warning for  talk of eating disorders and death, as that is a topic of the song.

so go listen to it and then read this, or maybe read about how its perfect and then listen to it with the context- idc.

The song starts off with a really gloomy tone, with melodys from the guitar, bass, and violin (i think). a good thirty second intro really sets the mood for this song. Also the particular melody that the instruments are creating reminds me of those white glistening lines that appear on the top of water when its in the sun, which fits with the ocean theme. they portray the ocean very well throught the song IMO.

Next Gareths voice comes in with some emotional lyrics right out of the gate, about grabbing the wrist of someone and having his fingers close around it- suggesting that this is a skinny person he is grabbing. then he talks about diets and how the person he is with isnt eating, and it becomes apparent that he is talking about a person he loves having an eating disorder.

fast forward to the next verse we get more about this characters backstory- he says her mother died when she was fourteen due to an allergic reaction- and then the character spent the rest of her adolescent years "experimenting with prescriptions / in a futile attempt to know more than the doctors" - and to me these lyrics mean that she used drugs as a coping mechanism.

next is the chorus, and all of the build up with the instruments leads to this huge sound that reminds me of waves crashing on the shore. The lyrics of the chorus are about (to me) when you are so consumed with emotion that you are all that you can think about in that moment. and when the song talks about "five hundred years dead set ahead of me / five hundred behind" I feel as if this is supposed to be talking about how in those moments where you have so much emotion to process it feels like it is never ending.

Then we go back to the story, and these verses are a little harder for me to articulate because I feel like its pure story telling and you just need to listen for yourself. but the pre-chorus is brilliant, and here is when they mention the sea, and here is when they talk about letting the sea consume you and just letting go. and then the chorus starts again with the waves of music. I seriously cant get over the drums in the chorus of this song, they really sound like huge waves, maybe during a storm, crashing on the sand.

in conclusion Los Campesinos! puts a lot of thought into their songs and I know i want to write about another one of their songs on here- probably multiple because some of their songs are so clever that it takes me literal years to decipher them and when I finally have that "aha moment" i am very proud of myself. This is a great song that, even if indie expirimental emo crazy stuff isnt your thing, you should listen to it, at least once. I got the pleasure of seeing them live last spring when they came to boston and I had the time of my life- one of the members, Rob Taylor(aka sparky deathcap) even drew me a picture after the show and I WILL be getting it tattood. I love them, Kim if youre reading this I love you, and yeah. i will fight for this songs spot on the "perfect" list.

i apoligize for the horrible grammar and spelling mistakes
