Today's fish of the day is the infamous box jellyfish! (if you live around warmer coasts, i'm sure you've heard of this one.)
Box jellyfish facts:
- The box jellyfish is named after it's box-like appearance.
- This creature is the most venomous animal on earth. The stings of some* species can quickly trigger cardiac arrests. Although they are not lethal, having less than 100 confirmed deaths, they feel like absolute hell!! ⊙﹏⊙
(*only some box jellyfish species are actually venomous. Many arent considered too harmful. The title “most venomous animal on earth” is a bit of a generalization!)
- Adult box jellyfish have 24 eyes!
- They can live to around 3 months in the wild, but when kept in captivity, they have been observed to survive much longer.
- Unlike other jellyfish which let themselves drift aimlessly in the currents until a fish gets stung by their tentacles, the box jellyfish actively hunts it's prey.
- To add to the previous fact, box jellyfish can swim at a speed of 4 knots. Thats around 6km/h, or 3.7mph. It doesn't sound like much, but thats basically the same speed as a jogger.
- It seems like some turtles are immune to box jellyfish stings because they greatly enjoy eating them! Good thing they like reducing the population of those buggers!
Do you got that jellyfish in you?
