hello!! I recently watched the movie The Love Witch and I’d like to discuss it a bit ♡
The Love Witch is a film categorized as horror and suspense (though it’s also labeled as comedy and romance) written and directed by ANNA BILLER, starring SAMANTHA ROBINSON as Elaine, a modern witch who loves to be loved.
the aesthetics of this movie make it stand out from others. despite being from 2016, it has a retro feel due to its saturated colors, clothing, and cinematography, creating a visual atmosphere that contrasts well with the themes explored in the film.
'*•.¸♡ SYNOPSIS
the story follows ELAINE PARKS, a young modern witch who moves to a small town in California after breaking up with a toxic relationship. Elaine is obsessed with finding perfect love and uses her magical skills, along with potions and spells, to seduce men and make them fall in love with her.
however, her attempts have disastrous consequences, as the men she casts spells on become consumed by love and ultimately die. as Elaine delves deeper into her quest for love and power, the film explores the fine line between desire, control, and emotional destruction.
'*•.¸♡ THEMES ADDRESSED
- witchcraft (duh)
- female empowerment (Samantha is so hot, F*CK, I LOVE HER)
- obsessive love
- ritual magic
- femme fatale
- love as control
- assassinati*n
'*•.¸♡ SYMBOLISM
the film uses a lot of symbols associated with witchcraft, such as pentagrams and rituals. the latter could be associated with disconnection from community and social isolation. additionally, the clothing Elaine wears throughout the movie showcases the duality between power and vulnerability, which is also reflected in her relationships with men. she is vulnerable to the desire to have them, yet she is so powerful that they cannot resist being with her, even knowing it will lead to their downfall.
'*•.¸♡ PERSONAL OPINION
I really enjoyed this movie a lot and I recommend it to all lovers of retro aesthetics. from the camera angles to the scene compositions, everything is very well done, and you can tell a lot of effort went into it. the only negative thing I can say about the film is that it might be a bit slow and tackles some heavy themes, BUT I LOVED IT!!!
Samantha Robinson’s performance perfectly captures the duality of power and vulnerability in the protagonist, adding seduction and making her a truly attractive character. if I had to choose a favorite scene, I couldn’t because SAMANTHA LOOKS SO DAMN GOOD THAT IT’S IMPOSSIBLE.
I hope it inspired you to watch this movie (if you do, please let me know what you think)
Thank you for reading my blog ♡
