Movie review: Misery (1990)

You are alone now

Hi! A  few days ago I watched the Stephen King movie adaptation Misery.  I've never read the book, but here's my take.

In this movie, a crazed fan of a famous author nurses him back to health after he breaks both legs in a crash trying to drive back from his rural Colorado cabin (what's up with King and isolated Colorado cabins?!). She flips out when she finds out he killed off the main character in his newest book and then imprisons him for the rest of the movie to write a new book.

It didn't surprise me that it was directed by the When Harry Met Sally/The Princess Bride guy-- absolutely no hate to those movies but the editing was a little weird for a thriller. Not weird like weird, weird like normal. They almost had the cadence of a comedy scene during some particularly intense escape attempts from the protagonist.

But other than that, the performances were amazing. Particularly Kathy Bates. Jesus, she was scary! Her mood swings came in like a wrecking ball every other scene and destroyed all my hopes and dreams. I was also a fan of James Caan's sort of tired and nervous sarcasm. He portrayed well non-immediate constant panic, if that makes sense. The feeling of literally have no legs to stand on was very present.

And, it might just be my personal preferences, but it really got good when it got grisly. [spoilers] Annie just completely destroying that guy's ankles and shooting a guy through the chest was a huge departure from the rest of the movie that worked for it.

I enjoyed it! Not the best King adaptation but it was solid and the performances shone the most. 3.5/5

Also, if it even works, sorry for weird blog code.
