Fish of the Day 14 - I got that gurnard in me

And, just like the previous entry... this is another beautiful animal. Except its an actual fish. (Go check out today's first Fish of the Day if you havent!)

Today's second fish is the Flying Gurnard. Look at that wingspan!

Honestly, when I first saw a picture of it, I thought it was a type of ray. But I was wrong.

Flying Gurnard facts:

- Do not confuse the flying gurnard for a flying fish! Unlike the latter, this creature tends to stick to the sandy ocean floor rather than breeching the surface.

- To add more confusion, this fish has been spotted... walking on the seafloor? Yeah, those giant "wings" they have don't actually help it swim very much, and it's slow moving. Using it's pelvic/pectoral fins to walk might just be easier for it.

- It's huge fins are rather used for scaring off predators.

- The reason why it's called the "flying gurnard" is because they make a grunting noise with their jaws and swim bladder, another tactic to scare off predators.

- Despite their spiny looking appearence, these fish aren't venomous. Its sort of a let down!! :(

Honestly, I wasn't able to find as much information about this creature as I thought i'd be able to. However, i'm still glad I was able to make an entry on it, because I think it's very pretty and it deserves some recognition!

Anyway, this is the last Fish of the Day entry for today. Bye bye for now! (^‿^)
