Has Ultra Fast Fashion Ruined Thrifting?

I don’t think it’s controversial to say that Brands like Shein and Romwe have completely ruined the thrifting experience. Going thrifting and getting that rush of finding a cute piece only to see the tag is heartbreaking. I have a lot of feelings about fast fashion, mainly that it’s garbage, and i just want to buy clothes that last me my whole lifetime and look cute. When i see these cheaply made, microplastic riddled pieces at the local thrift i can’t help but feel bad for them. I know nobody will buy it because of the tag, so i will occasionally buy one if it goes on sale which they always do. But my first time i bought one of these items was by complete accident. One day i drove myself to the local thrift early in the morning to buy myself some new clothes, and I had brought my mom with me. My mom wanted to help me shop so she walked with me to the skirt section to take a look. She pulled down a very cute beige midi skirt and i immediately fell in love without even holding it. I told her to put it on the cart and i stared at it the whole ride home from the thrift. when i i had gotten home i inspected the garment. it had a very specific smell to it -Which i now recognize as the dreaded shein stench- and was paper thin. And i got curious about what the skirt was made of because of its texture. And just behind the washing instructions i saw the dreaded ‘S’, in a font any fashion girly knows and dreads by heart. I had bought Shien from my local thrift. I felt heartbroken, and i felt so ashamed i threw it under my bed for 2 days afterwards. But i learned my lesson. I now feel less ashamed about the item, and i’m wearing it as i write this. Do i wish I never bought the skirt? If im being quite honest, I wish the skirt was never made. But I know if i didn’t buy it, nobody else would. It’s not supporting Shein directly, so i’d rather have it to wear then have it end up in a landfill or god forbid the ocean. What do you guys think? I’d love to hear your experiences with fast fashion ending up in thrifts.

i agree with you 100%! fast fashion has ruined thrifting and its sad to see. i don't thrift much but i have heard the side effects from shein and my mom does thrift. luckily i dont think shes run into any shein clothes but i 100% get your view. nobody wants microplastics and clothing that breaks in 3 days if you constantly wear it. especially due to inflation and prices more people are ordering from shein and its sad to see. its either for a fashion trend or they just like it but when they see they dont like the texture or anything they decide to donate it and that kinda sucks. because if you don't like the texture or anything why do you think people will like it too? it's genuinely sad to see and i do hope the economy gets better so fast fashion stays dead for good. i hope you do get lucky and never get shein clothes in your thrift again <3
