Ok, we're doing this again!
Second fish of the day is the coelacanth! This fish has a crazy history!!
Heres the story: Before discovering living specimens of the coelacanth, scientists thought the coelacanth went exinct around 66 million years ago. However, in 1938, they were rediscovered, living in south africa! This species particular species ( Latimeria chalumnae ) may be classified as critically endangered, but it's incredible how they're survived for so long.
Coelacanth facts:
- As of now, there are only two living species of coelacanth.
- Their name may look like it's pronounced "coal-a-canth" but its supposed to be pronounced "seel-a-canth"!
- They are able to unhinge their jaws... lucky.
- The rediscovery of the coelacanth is considerd to be a part of the most prominent zoological discoveries of the 20th century.
- Female coelacanths have a 3 year pregnancy. That sounds awful.
- Instead of a spine, coelacanths have a "Notochord", a hollow rod filled with oil. For most vertebrates, the notochord is only present during the embreyotic phase. Weird!
- You may get outlived by a coelacanth, as these creatures can live to 100 years!
Thats all for today! Do you got that coelacanth in you?
