TLDR, these links will also help noobs
EDIT: https://torquemag.io/2023/02/how-to-use-mastodon/ is much more recent.

In addition to topics and vibe, moderation (or lack of) is another angle to consider.
I started [on mastodon.social], so I can say this with my whole chest: **It's also the worst.**
There may as well be no moderation at all, so you have a ton of assholes and spammers to contend with from the jump-- and that's not even counting all the questionable instances m.s hasn't defederated from.
Granted, I only know this because I've been aware of Mastodon since 2016, and used it for just as long. I learned about these nuances the hard way. It took three migrations to different instances to finally settle on my current one; weirder.earth seems to give a damn about the safety of its users.

also to add: if you just want to not be on Twitter, Mastodon.social is good for that.
If you want *a better experience* than Twitter, get on a different instance with some of the criteria I mentioned.

Well yea, I personally consider it fredom of speech that doesn't assure the comfort of either the listener or speaker, which is the only way you can really do freedom, BUT that doen't mean anyone has to tolerate it, and I also conider it the genious of instances. It lets mastodon on the whole handle problems with moderation AND lack of algorithm quite elegantly.
As for instances I'm actually thinking about hopping myself, from my OG wehavecookies.social to dice.camp. Mostly because it only seems to take one or 2 wehavecookies users to be following a bot reposting porn from reddit to make it half of my "global" feed. That and there's a lot of politics (and I mean actual country policies) that neither affect me or relate to my opinions in any way.
