My personal favorite fanfic tropes !!

Here is an incomplete list of some alternate universes that I love to read or see art of !!

1.) Secret Idol AU

I've only ever really seen this one once and only once, but it was written so cutely that I never did forget about it. It's an au where character A is either hyper obsessed with or the number one hater of a masked singer type of popstar, and B is secretly that popstar. I personally like the idea of A being the singer's number one hater and B just listening and enduring the criticism until A slowly starts to enjoy the music or just the reveal and A gets all embarrassed for being so mean to their crush/friend. 

I don't particularly know why this one stuck out to me so much or why I've been thinking of it so much recently. This au is the reason that I decided to make this list in the first place. I do remember that it was one of the first fanfics that I ever read as well, way back in about 2015/2016 for the anime Fairytail. That anime just had detrimental neurological effects on me as a kid because that was the first time I ever felt so connected to a piece of media that I sought out fans and fandom media after watching it. 

2.) Hanahaki Disease

This is one of the ones that I'll admit I do prefer when it is fan art rather than fanfics. For anyone wondering Hanahaki disease is a FAKE disease in which a person's body will produce flowers inside of the lungs when feeling unrequited or unspoken love. I really like this concept, although I can see why some people might find it boring or even problematic at times. I do think it can be done tastefully and the art is always so pretty when I do come across it. 

I think this would count under the "soulmates au" umbrella and while I don't know how I feel about others in the soulmates genre this is one of my favorites.

3.) Pain sharing (?)

I actually don't know what this one is called but basically the soulmate au where all of your pain/sensations can be felt by your soulmate. I think that this is a very interesting concept that could produce so many unique situations and have so many fun twists and spins. The most obvious one that most people think of or write right away is the angst. Feeling your soulmate get critically injured, or sharing their chest pains as they breathe their last breath. 

Now those are all fine and dandy (not really it's angst), but I also think that there is potential for such cute fluff too. For instance character A feeling B's pain from being sick or lonely and wrapping themself up in weighted/heated blankets so that B can feel A's embrace even from a distance. There's even a potential for having comedically timed sensations where B is getting petty revenge on A by purposefully stubbing their own toe while A is at an important business meeting.
