Okay! Not really a fish!!! But the Yeti Crab (AKA Kiwa hirsuta) is a very interesting marine creature with one standout feature!
THEY'RE FUZZY!!!!!!!!!
Yeti crab facts:
- The fuzz on their arms sadly isn't actual fur. Its something known as "setae" which is sort of similar to fur, but it's more bristle-y. Bugs have it.
- To make these silly little things even cuter, they only grow to about 6 inches! That's smaller than what I expected when originally researching about these crabs.
- With their fuzzy arms, you'd think yeti crabs live in colder temperatures, and it's true... but their habitat also has a fair share of thermal vents which spew out high-pressure boiling hot water and molten metals. Their home is a mixture of frigid and scalding waters... which sounds like hell. These poor creatures endure these conditions by hanging around the thermal undersea geisers, far enough to not cook themselves and close enough to not freeze. They also huddle together to be even cozier. AWWW!!!!
- Their main source of food is bacteria, which they catch by waving their arms around and using their setae as a sort of net. These things are so cute, their metheod of getting food looks like a little dance!!
- We don't have much info about these peculiar things, but some believe they are blind. :(
I really wish we knew more about yeti crabs, because personally, I think they're ADORABLE!!!! I think I made that very obvious while writing this! I do know another fuzzy crustacean which is less mysterious I may blog about later...
Anyway, do you got that yeti in you? I think I do. They are very cute and fuzzy and if i were to be a crab, i'd wanna be fuzzy like them.
