return to the woods

why oh why have i always wanted to live like a creature. 7 year old me read camping guides and learnt how to build dens and fish. 10 year old me wished for the apocalypse so i could live in the aftermath. And now, 16 year old me is planning to  live in the woods.

the problem being i've NEVER put any of my survival 'skills' into practice. never hunted, never built a shelter, never even been camping without an electric stover and my parents watching over me. but oh how i wish to live in the woods.

the only actual skills i've got under my belt that could POSSIBLY be useful in this ideal life are sewing, horse riding, and my overwhelming urge to store essentials (seriously, 5 year old me was hiding all the clothes and tools he could find). MAYBE i could start a fire if i really had to. but I do think if i had an opportunity to put these skills into practice i could be an absolute beast.

love me a forest.

1) I am sure you have heard of Ted Kaczynski, and maybe even read his books + the manifesto.

2) I would recommend looking online, either for simple website tutorials or books regarding stuff like farming, simple-living, etc. To go a few months or years without technically needing to leave your land, you could look into jarring foods like fruit+vegetables, and vacuum-sealing then deep-freezing other foods like meat. Farming will be a necessity to not have to be near anyone else, and food-storage will be a necessity if society falls + you had a bad harvest. Water too should be obtained, but filtered if it is not clean beyond a reasonable doubt where you are (in the modern day, you almost certainly will have to filter water btw).

3) While on tech, get used to using it offline. Books are perfect for information, but if you use tech to find new info as I do via the internet, I would recommend downloading it. A few terabytes will be plenty even if you download a lot of larger data. I have over 530GB of books, but those are mostly screenshots of PDFs which increase the data-size of everything by an extreme amount. Otherwise, it wouldn't be even close to something like 100 gigabytes I think.
