I heard this question recently, and I've thought about it long and hard, here's the answer I came up with. I'm very altruistic which means I care about other people and when I see a stranger I don't think of them as just that...a stranger. I think of their lives, their hobbies, their jobs, who they love and the people who love them. I couldn't see them as just a background character, if they go who else does? Would someone who loves them dearly kill themselves also? Then what would that make me? On the other hand I've never been loved, truly, by a person just for being me. So if I were to find someone who did I would never let them go I'd be with them and by their side forever. True love is something hard to come by these days so someone like that would be my top priority. So, if it came to it and I had to choose, I would save the people, the strangers. Afterwards, I'd take my life to be with that one person for eternity. What would you guys do?
Would you kill the 1 person you love to save 100 strangers?

I would listen to the wise words of Gandalf the Grey. "Many that live deserve death. And some that die deserve life. Can you give it to them? Then do not be too eager to deal out death in judgement. For even the very wise cannot see all ends"

That does make me see it differently, but these are strangers, how would I know they they deserve it?

You can never know the outcome. Maybe the person you love will go on to save 1000 people if they live. Maybe one of the 100 will go on to kill 1000 people if they live. Sometimes the hardest choice is to do nothing and allow the universe or God or fate or whatever to decide.
