Karrzz' guide to diy #1

Idk if anyone will actually read this but i thought it would be fun to share steps, tips, and inspo for alternative Diy. Im still relatively new to the scene so its mostly just basic information for other people like me just starting out.

I think for this first one ill just do a super basic tutorial for custom patches

Materials:

Old pair of pants: any color you want, i just got some old black jeans from my local thrift

Any kind of paint: preferably fabric paint if you can afford it, if not any paint you have laying around should be good. I recommend getting black, white, and red as just your basic colors.

any kind of way to trace and cut out the logo/ design your doing: Im lucky enough to have a printer at my house but if you dont have access to one im pretty sure most librarys have public printers, you can also find an image to use and trace it right from your device. If your going to do that i recomend sticking your paper down somehow so that is doesnt move around while your tracing.

any way to cut out the stencil: i would reccomend getting a boxcutter or something similar since it makes it significantly easier to cut out the more detailed images compaired to scissors or something.

Steps:

1. find an image that you would like to make into a patch, if you are looking for pre made stencils ill link a few websites to use.

theres alot more to use but these are the ones i use alot. if you cant find a band you want you can also make your own. I normaly just look up the band logo and leave some connecting bits for letters such as O, R, B, etc.

take the boxcutter and cut out the black lines from the logo or image.

2. take any kind of scissors and cut out a large section from your fabric. This makes it easier to place the stencil later and you also dont have to keep cutting off small peices from the clothing item/ fabric your using.

3. Next take your stencil and place it where you want it on the fabric, (I also like to put some tape on each end of the stencil that way it stays in place as im painting it. Lay out your paints and take any kind of paint brush available and fill in the stencil. Im super particular about this stuff so i like to put alot of coats but its really just personal opinion.

4. After removing the stencil (do this pretty soon after finishing filling in the stencil cause once it dries the paper will stick) look for any imperfections in the stencil and go over it with black or whatever other color the fabric is.

5. Depending on how long it takes the paint to dry you should be done. I usually just leave my stuff to dry over night. If you feel the need to im also pretty sure you can use something like mode podge just to seal it but i usually just skip over that. the only thing it really does is make the colors last longer after washes but for most of my patches theyve been fine.

So that should be it. the stencils can also be used for other things like shirts and bags so i would recommend having a place to keep your stencils if you feel like your gonna use them again. if you have any questions pls let me know and if you have any critiques that would be appreciated.
