Why do you miss "the old internet"?

Honestly, I born in 2007, My Chemical Romance was at its peak and the skinny jeans were cool

I was a Kid, a latinoamerican kid

Millennials are the border between Gen Y and Gen Z

I'm the border between Gen Z and Gen Alpha

I started using a computer when FNAF was popular and flash games were cool

I consider that 2014 was the start to the end

Everything changed

I didn't experience anything that I now consider cool

Companies took over the internet and everything started to go tasteless

I don't consider my piece of generation and the next "bads" or "stupids"

I consider ourselves victims of the generation that was supposed to save us

Millennials... what happened?

To clarify, I don't hate new stuff, I LOVE FLASH GAMES (although they're dead now D:)
I just wish I had a little bit of what I love about the old internet
Learn to appreciate new things, seeing how we are doing, they will surely be replaced tomorrow.

I get you. Seriously, that special something, that SPARK is gone. I often watch old videos and consume media from that time because I feel nostalgic, but because of how things have changed, even that doen´t feel the same anymore.
But it´s better than most of the stuff being published today. I think it´s reallyy because of mainstream media. No offense, but those who used to mock the "weird kids" who liked the odd sides of he internet at the tme, are now all over on said sides of the internet.
Some shows or games sudddenly become popular, than are forgotten quick because people are starting to just follow trends and not actually engage in smth much.
Creators are also more focused on attracting those consumers, mass producing garbage.
And the development of humor also plays into this, I think. I´m not that nig of a fan of it. Back then (I sound like a elderly person =w=) kids used to read/write fanfics with passion, engaging with their small but dedicated group, now it´s all over the place. And stuff like skibidi toilet or smth really bothers me too. Like, what is that, pls...

Anyway, sorry thst my comment is so long... It´s just nice to see people feel similar

EXACTLY
Fandoms seem to have died and everything feels so boring, it's like everyone and everything is replaceable

i was a little kid pretending to be a teenager online during the old internet era lol (2009-2013 i would say). even though i was in a third world muslim country, i got introduced to the rest of the world, especially american culture. i made friends from all over the world. the internet allowed a lot more self-expression back then. the social aspect of the internet was something new and exciting. everything was new and exciting.
i have a deep nostalgia for that time.

I think the expression was everything, everyone could be whoever they wanted on the internet, before the "cringe" (I'll do a blog about the cringe later)

we really brought back bullying with cringe culture and pseudo-intellectualism

Flash games (and Java games) ruled! RIP
Literally entire worlds were destroyed when they decommissioned Flash.

For me it's probably how much more self expression you were capable of if you wanted to, you could obviously still just have your account be a pofile picture and a bio. But you could also do whatever people do here, directly edit some of the HTML in the web page of your account, add images or gifs wherever. Also, just the fact that having your own personal website was a relatively normal thing.

I guess a part of it is also the lack of monetization, a lot of the old internet was not trying to squeeze every adverisement into wherever to make as much profit as possible.

So i guess it's just kind of the whole vibe. But then again that vibe was probably somewhat created from the whole thing not being entirely accessible. You HAD to actually know your stuff to even use the internet.

I think thats about it.

The fact that the Internet was "harder to use" was a kind of filter that discourage some people from using it and people were not as addicted
It doesn't bother me that you can monetize with the internet, it bothers me that any idiot can do it and abuse that system
They basically took away what the Internet was all about: freedom of expression and individuality

Completely agreed.
