wtf is black rock shooter (aka vague and bad tut on how to get into it)

a bad tut on how to get into an over 10 year old franchise

black rock shooter comes initially from an illustration by huke on pixiv in late 2007. This illustration then inspired ryo (supercell) to make a song based on it using Miku, posted on nico nico douga in 2008.

an OVA (original video animation) was later announced in 2009. the pilot of the OVA was released on september 30th (my birthday 😛), 2009. the actual OVA was released some time in 2010 i don't remember exactly when (whooops)

there are two anime adaptations, Black Rock Shooter, and Black Rock Shooter: Dawn Fall. Black Rock Shooter was released in 2012, having 8 episodes. Dawn Fall was released in 2022 (??!!??! everybody rejoiced), and i think it has 12 episodes? me when i forget everything about my favorite medias

off the top of my head i can name two or three games, Black Rock Shooter: The Game (how original), Black Rock Shooter: Fragment, and Puchitto Rock Shooter. i'm pretty sure there are a bunch of random spin offs and collabs i'm forgetting about but i'm writing this in class and i don't feel like doing all that research. Black Rock Shooter: The Game was for the PSP, i'm pretty sure Black Rock Shooter: Fragment was a mobile game (or collab?) but it has since stopped online service as of early 2024. Puchitto Rock Shooter was a cute browser game that i am upset got closed down!!!! :(

fortunately (or unfortunately, depending on how you look at it), all the installations of black rock shooter are relatively stand alone. you can kind of start anywhere and be fine. i started with the OVA and then moved to the first anime, then Dawn Fall. i'm in the process of playing Black Rock Shooter: The Game (kind of playing and kind of watching, i got it on my phone but it is NOT translated and i do NOT speak japanese..). Tbh idk whats going on with Fragment, i still need to watch a playthrough or something.
