okay starting this off w/ the disclaimer that you should ALWAYS critique yr favs, nobody is above criticism etc etc.
HOWEVER!!!! jesus christ you guys. i keep seeing takes over and over that are saying "chappell needs to get media training" or "chappell doesn't deserve her fame" or "chappell needs to accept that fame comes with people being obligated to you" and. um. WHAT??? like. genuinely it feels like the mainstream was just waiting for an excuse to turn on her. and like. omfgggg. people LOVE to come on apps like fucking. tiktok. and being shitty.
so one of the big things i see ppl criticizing her for is her strict boundaries towards pictures/touching/calling her her actual name/etc- which i feel are not only EXTREMELY FAIR but also should be the standard!!!! a musician's job is to go on stage and play their music. that's what they're getting paid for, that's what they do. when your favorite mcdonald's cashier is off-duty do you go up and ask for a picture? no!!! (and if you do you should go in preparing for the answer to be no lol) the tiktoks she posted about her boundaries were like. honestly very polite for what they could be, and if she were a man (yes im going there) her tone would not be as misconstrued as it has been.
i've seen TONS of people online say like. "her allegory of going up to a random lady is flawed because she's not a random lady" YES SHE IS!!!!! YOU DON'T KNOW HER!!!!!! im going to be honest you have probably never talked to her one on one in your life. you know her music, but you aren't her friend!!!! if anything, my earlier comparison to a mcdonalds cashier is MORE flawed!! asking for a stranger's picture is weird!!!! at least outside the context of like. a meet and greet you know?
one of the other big things is the fact she said she would not be endorsing kamala harris, and people are acting like she said kamala harris is a bitch and then endorsed trump- BUT THAT'S NOT WHAT SHE SAID!!!!!!! endorsement is NOT voting, and chappell has SAID she's voting blue. she is sticking to her beliefs about palestine!!! and then like. two months ago there was that huge movement of blocking/cancelling celebs who hadn't spoke up about palestine- which chapppell did!!! in fact, she's standing true to the values she laid out at the governer's ball (paraphrasing, she said she would not perform at the white house until the us gov stopped funding israel)(which it hasn't)
i won't get too into politics here but. idk people are acting like she endorsed trump bc she didn't endore harris. which is provably untrue.
also she's cancelled a few shows. and you know what? sucks for the people who got cancelled on but that's life baby! that's why you get travel insurance b4 spending thousands of dollars on a festival!!!!!! that's why you plan other shit to do on a vacation too!!!!!!!!!
obviously not to say you can't be upset. but that's you!!!!! that's not her fault!!!!!! chappell herself is not at fault for your financial loss.
prioritizing mental health exists for celebrities too. and it should.
there is NOTHING- and i mean nothing- that excludes someone from humanity. that includes fame- but it feels that most people take the fact that someone is famous as an excuse to dehumanize them. you don't want chappell roan, the person, the artist... you want a pretty doll who sings songs and is niceys all the time.
and it's definitely exacerbated by misogyny, and homophobia, but so many celebrities get this treatment, and it makes me wonder how many people fame specifically have taken from us.
would kurt cobain still be alive? could britney spears have escaped the abuse she endured? the list goes on.
idk where to end this. but... food for thought ig

agree WHOLEHEARTEDLY. how is her nuanced take about actually critically examining politicians being thrown THIS out of proportion?!! its always "fuck the rich" and "question authority" until its not anymore i guess?? idk and not to mention, in regards to her boundaries with fans, when Ludwig did this EXACT THING in 2020 with his "i am not your friend" video, he was PRAISED. everything you said was true, and im sending you a friend request after i post this comment.

I wrote this in a bulletin a while back, but I want to make a public comment about this. I really don't understand why people are mad at Chappell Roan for saying what she said about U.S. politics. I completely agree with what she said and actually think it's amazing that a celebrity dared to deviate from the norm of blindly supporting whatever candidate people say they should support. I am not a fan of Chappell Roan's music, but after hearing what she had to say about the election I gained a lot of respect for her.
