MY OPINION ABOUT ALTERNATIVE SUBCULTURES

I’m Hi gang I’ve recently got pretty into learning about alt subcultures other than my own :) 

Im basically punk and a metalhead kinda grungy too, I really like both genres and I believe in the the political ideas with punk culture. So let’s start! 

Some alt subcultures are groups of people such as emos, punks, goths, scene kids, and grunge! There are MANNNY MORE

MOST alternative subcultures are based off a music genre, a political ideology or even both! For example to be emo you HAVE to listen to the music or you’re a poser since it started because of the music! 

But you don’t have to dress emo to be emo, you simply have to listen to the music (I’m not too sure with emo and political ideologies but Ngl it’s weird to be conservative and alt 😭😭😭)

To be punk you MUST have punk politics and listen to the music, or your ruining what the subculture was actually made for, but again you don’t have to dress “punk” 

IN MY OPINION

I personally don’t think alt or alternative is not a music genre or a style in itself, instead I think it’s an umbrella term for something that isn’t in the mainstream.

GRUNGE  

Grunge needs a section in itself 😭😭😭

Recently, grunge has been getting a lot of posers imo, with people saying they’re “fairy grunge” which idk what that is, but they don’t even listen to grunge music. Which again is VERY important. Some people in the grunge community are js toxic tho, cuz I once saw someone say that you have to do drugs to be grunge which is just no Ngl.

Can something that’s alt be popular?

I personally think yes, as bands like Alice In Chains, Black Flag, Pierce the Veil, The Cure, and Korn are VERY popular but still definitely alternative bands.

Is metal music alt?

Some of it is I think, because like a said Korn is Nu metal but a lot of mall goths listen to them, and kawaii metal because a lot of cutecore people listen to them!

But are bands like Metallica, Iron Maiden, and Megadeth alt?

Probably not cuz of how popular they are, but I’m not too sure so drop your opinions in the comments if you want!

Are there alt subgenres that aren’t music based? 

I honestly don’t know the answer to this so if anyone has ideas about this feel free to share them!!!

I’ve been seeing more and more people loving to pretend bands they listen to are alt, I’ve heard Arctic Monkeys and Mother Mother is punk, Girl in Red is goth, and Cavetown is Emo. So Ermmm 

There has also been a rise of “alt” artists, *cough cough* TX2, Caroline Carr, and MGK, *cough cough* who literally just be alt to get money and it pisses me off!

My final thing on this section is being new to an alt scene doesn’t make you a poser! Everyone starts somewhere! Just try to get some ideas from people that with experience on the subculture and trust me it can help a lot!!!

CONCLUSION

This is all I gotta say for now if you wanna comment something to say your ideas go ahead! Just asking for everyone to be respectful and open to ideas and not be be close minded!
