How much does ADHD and Autism overlap?

I have been diagnosed with ADHD for about a year now, and I've been taking meds to manage it so I can do better in school.

But my father has autism and ADD, and a lot of his autism mannerisms are similar to things I do. So I was wondering if these two overlap and if they do how much. Cause if they do overlap than I probably don't have autism but if they don't overlap much than I might have it.

Some stuff me and my dad share: Lifelong hyperfixations, "Bad" texture avoidance, stimming/rocking, inappropriate emotions in high stress situations, only feeling normal when under the influence, and some others I cant think of right now.

I'm probably just looking into this too much but oh well.

They overlap quite often, actually. In fact, some people recommend that if you get diagnosed with ADHD that you should look into an autism diagnosis (and vice versa.)

While approximately 10% of the population has ADHD, some research has shown that 40% of autistic people have ADHD, with other studies suggesting that the rate may be closer to 70%. Conversely, while 2-3% of people are autistic, 20-50% of those with ADHD are also autistic. (Source)

It's very interesting to think ADHD and autism co-occur this often but it happens!
