I have a question!

I have a question, do people still read/write fan fiction anymore??? just curious because likeeee I remember when it was really big when I was in middle/high school and now that I'm a bit older I have kinda grown out of that phase but is it still a thing? bro I remember when me and my friends would have sleep overs and all read CHAPTERS from fanfics we were all reading. like wattpad was theeeee app. Orr does no one care about it anymore? I just want to know what the youth is doing in their free time. y'all reading actual books nowadays? paper back or hardcover? lol just thinking out loud and feeling nostalgic I guess :3

I deffo think fanfic culture as it was like 10+ years ago has died a bit, but fanfics are still thriving lol I read fanfiction on a weekly basis and I see plenty of ppl who read it online, but it's definitely less. I've abandoned Wattpad since 2021 and I'm an ao3 purist. If I'm desperate for a certain ship I might search on other sites like Tumblr, deviant art, live journal or god forbid Wattpad. anyway I also read a lot of physical books and I think that's what current teens who like reading do mostly.. also webcomics are super popular.

I actually don't know, AO3 is thriving, no matter what point in space and time you enter lol
But I think fanfics are not as big as they were before, at least ppl's first impulse after watching some piece of media isn't looking for a fanfic about it, you know?
Also, most books now follow the same wattpad-y structure all fanfics had, and most of the literature directed to teens has the same cadence really long fanfics had :b

I do read, I prefer hard cover books over paperback. The books I'm currently reading are Never Home Alone by Rob Dunn, The Secret Wisdom of Nature by Peter Wohlleben, & Tulipmania by Mike Dash. Most all of the books I read are nonfiction science/biology or related to it in some way shape or form.

Not a big fan of fanfics as I can be very specific about how I think the characters should act especially with characters I'm attached to. When it isn't done "right" it can be a bit upsetting. Thus I opt to steer clear almost entirely. Love original works though! There's some I really enjoy on A03.

In terms of webcomics I lean heavy towards slice of life-y and romance, the ones I'm really liking rn are The Beast of Hadingley Hill, Les Normaux, Stick n Poke, Lady Liar, A Spell for a Smith, Daybreak, & Dog Haus. I adore when characters are realistic in the way they speak and behave.
