Lucretia Pomerenke - Moroccan? (would have changed her name, she/her)

• Lucretia was originally in France training at the Paris Opera Ballet School  to become a Danseuse Etoile. She was eventually barred from performing and lost her chance at stardom after failing on her final exam due to racism. She took up cabaret and sewing for other students and members of the corps de ballet to stay in France and send money back to her family, unable to tell them the truth of her failure. 

A Noblewoman of Von Hochberg-Pless or Mecklenburg-Strelitz

• Referred to as Madame or Erherzogin (German, maybe not)

• Possibly a conwoman

Cesare Messier - (French, changed their name, they/he)

• Butler

• Moonlighting as a hypnotist and spiritualist

• Left their old life behind

• Cesare comes from a watchmaker family, their father the last to take up the trade as he had no (biological) sons. Deeming the career unsuitable for Cesare, he worked to save up enough to send them to a finishing school of their choice, hoping their entrance as a debutante would enable them to marry rich and have a comfortable life. Cesare, in secret, learned the watch making trade, which also thrust them into the world of hypnotists and spiritualism. Understanding that this career path wasn’t lucrative and their father would not allow them the money to keep the family business going, Cesare chose a finishing school intended for boys in service without their fathers knowledge. 

Both found their way to the Madame in France, originally as a waitservant and seamstress. Being the youngest of The Madame’s staff, they quickly rose through the ranks due to other servants retiring or simply dying,  becoming the Head Butler and Lady in Waiting. They are her only servants by the time The Madame decides to relocate to Versailles from Strasbourg.

Cesares powers manifest in their eyes, not realizing until recently their special timepieces are not the source of their abilities. He finds that he has a harder time controlling his suggestive abilities around Lucretia, as his desire for her subconsciously activates his powers. Cesare tries to maintain their distance and stoicism, but every glance betrays them because Lucretia always seems to be watching him.

Lucretia begs to come to one of his shows after finding out first about his watchmaking abilities and eventually finding documents on seances in their clothes while doing laundry. She can put two and two together and of course, he allows her to attend with the promise that she never speaks of it.
