. compliment something semi obvious like their profile, pix or something. Then just ask them questions about whatever they get most excited to go on about.
A school of thought that some employ is the Ford Method at which they have a few loaded questions they can have ready for general ice breakers.
Also you can work on giving active listening techniques a shot. Nodding and Saying “mmhmm” and “I see” and repeating what you hear... “so you are saying it’s really a bad movie huh?” this keeps you engaged in the flow of conversation and allows you to engage without having to always make up new content.
