Promotion and relegation in American sports

I have an idea on how #PromotionAndRelegation might work in #AmericanSports. For those who don't know, in most #sports leagues in the world, they have what's called "promotion and relegation", where where teams can move up and down among divisions in a league system , based on their performance over a season. Leagues that use promotion and relegation systems are often called open leagues. In a system of promotion and relegation, the best-ranked team or teams in a lower division are promoted to a higher division for the next season, and the worst-ranked team or teams in the higher division are relegated to the lower division for the next season. Alternatively, primarily in #Australia, #Singapore, and especially #Canada and the #UnitedStates, is a closed model based on licensing or franchises. This maintains the same number of teams from year to year, with occasional admission of expansion teams and relocation of teams already in the league, and with no team movement between the major or minor leagues. This is mostly due to the fact that the professional sports leagues in #NorthAmerica are basically a business and they make money for the league and it's owners, regardless of how good or bad a team is. Promotion and relegation have the effect of allowing the maintenance of a hierarchy of leagues and divisions, according to the relative strength of their teams. They also maintain the importance of games played by many low-ranked teams near the end of the season, which may be at risk of relegation. In contrast, the final games of a low-ranked US or Canadian team serve little to no purpose, and in fact losing may be beneficial to such teams because they offer a better position in the next year's draft, also known as tanking.

In any case, I still think a similar system could work in American sports. What would happen is that the current structure of leagues like the #NFL would remain intact and have the same number of teams, but what would happen is that team that had winning records and/or made the #playoffs in the previous year would be placed in an A tier and would face only other teams with similar records in the following season while teams bad records in the past year will be relegated to a B tier and would only play other teams with similar records. For example, the worst team in the NFL in 2023 was the #CarolinaPanthers and they would only face other teams in their conference, the NFC, with similar records such as the #WashingtonCommanders and #ArizonaCardinals. It would keep things more competitive. It would also allow for more team in the leagues than they have now. I think it's worth a shot.
