*or month? or forever? I'm not sure (・・;)ゞ
⌗. Empty - Janet Jackson
One of the most beautifully crafted songs ever. So ahead of its time, yet it still sounds like it could be released today: a drum-and-bass-inspired production (similar to Atlanta Bass), lyrics about the emptiness of online relationships, and in an album all about sexuality and self-worth— all achieved in 1997! Technicalities aside, this song is just so floaty and perfect and outright magical.
⌗. My Need- Janet Jackson
Continuing on The Velvet Rope, if Empty is floaty and magical, My Need is her down-to-earth sister (in how the production sounds to my ears, at least.) It’s a terrible earworm recently, and I keep finding myself humming the chorus all day long. Gorgeous.
⌗. Lapdance - N.E.R.D (the 2001/"electronic" version)
Now I love the 2002/”live band” version of N.E.R.D’s In Search Of…, but Lapdance is the one song I think was so much better on the 2001/”electronic” version. I think it's based on feeling: ‘01 feels like the song is about a lapdance, ‘02 makes the song’s meaning (calling government officials whores basically LOL) very clear in its heavy instrumentals. Also, the cowbell on the ‘02 version is barely audible, and I really liked the cowbell…
⌗. Hollaback Girl - Gwen Stefani
I think if you don't like Hollaback Girl you should die. A joke obviously, but it's such a stupid song it's good.
⌗. Plug It In - Basement Jaxx & JC Chavez
So crazy to think this is the same JC Chavez from NSYNC LOL. Electronica mixed with rock is a genre well beyond its years (from the 2024 perspective at least), but I think this is one of the best songs to come from the mix of the two. Chorus is fire, the first post-chorus is insane, and the instrumental at the end is groovy as fuck.
I'm always accepting song recommendations! I've got 4GB to fill :-)
As always, Thx 4 Reading!,
Nicholas ♡
